Prefer Video: Avalon River Cruise Rooms Explained
The good news: there is no universally “best” room on an Avalon river cruise. The most expensive option isn’t necessarily the right one for you.
The best choice really depends on your budget, how much time you expect to spend in your room, how important the view is to you and the kind of experience you want onboard.
We have sailed with Avalon, and in this guide we are comparing its three main room experiences: the Deluxe Stateroom, Panorama Suite and Royal Suite, to help you choose with confidence.
In this article:
Avalon River Cruise Rooms at a Glance
Room type | Approximate size | Best for | Main trade-off |
Royal Suite | 300 sq. ft. on many Suite Ships | Travelers who prioritize space, comfort & a premium experience | Highest price and very limited availability Features an Open-Air Balcony |
Deluxe Stateroom | 172 sq. ft. | Value-focused travelers, light sleepers & guests who mainly use their room to sleep & shower | Smaller fixed window near the waterline |
Panorama Suite | 200 sq. ft. | Travelers who want river views, added space & Avalon’s signature experience | Higher price than the Deluxe Stateroom Features an Open-Air Balcony |
The Royal Suite: Best for Space and a Premium Experience
The Royal Suite is Avalon’s most spacious and exclusive room category.
Most of Avalon’s Royal Suites offer approximately 300 square feet of space. Inventory for these rooms is extremely limited though, with only two per ship, so these rooms sell out quickly, particularly on popular itineraries and departure dates.
The additional square footage creates a more residential feeling, you get a separate larger sitting area, more room to unpack, relax and move around. You could even have company over if you’re traveling with friends or family.
Who should choose a Royal Suite?
This room may be right for you if:
Extra space is a major part of feeling comfortable on vacation.
You plan to spend meaningful downtime in your suite.
You are taking a longer sailing and want more room to settle in.
You value a premium experience more than finding the lowest fare.
You are celebrating a special occasion and want the room itself to feel memorable.
You are traveling with friends or family and would like a more comfortable private place to gather.

What are you really paying for?
The Royal Suite isn’t simply about sleeping in a bigger room. You’re paying for breathing room, scarcity, prestige, comfort and the ability to make your suite a larger part of the vacation.
That can be worthwhile for guests who love quiet mornings, afternoon breaks or private time after a full day ashore. But if you don’t plan to spend a lot of time in your room, you may get more value from choosing the Panorama Suite or Deluxe Stateroom and use the savings elsewhere.
You’re also getting the open-air balcony with this room as well but it’s facing the living space not the bed as it does the Panorama Suite.
The Deluxe Stateroom: Best for Value
If you think of your room as a comfortable place to shower, sleep and get ready for another day of exploring, the Deluxe Stateroom might be the perfect option for her.
At approximately 172 square feet, these rooms are located on the lower deck and feature a high, fixed window. Because that window sits closer to the waterline, you will not get the sweeping, open-air view offered by the suites but you will still see the river from a surprisingly interesting angle which is known as the swan view.
The best part, you’re saving money and it doesn’t change any other part of your vacation. You still get to enjoy the same ship, meals, public spaces, included excursions and onboard service as guests in the other room categories.
Who should choose a Deluxe Stateroom?
This room may be right for you if:
You think of your cabin primarily as a place to sleep and shower.
You expect to spend most of your time exploring ports, relaxing on the sky deck or socializing in the lounge.
You would rather put the price difference toward flights, extra hotel nights, optional excursions or another bucket-list experience.
You’re traveling solo and don’t need additional living space.
You value a quiet room on a lower deck.
Bonus: Being lower on the ship can also mean less noticeable movement, although river cruising is generally much calmer than ocean cruising. That can make the Deluxe Stateroom appealing to light sleepers or travelers who are sensitive to motion.

What is the compromise?
The biggest trade-off is the window. It is positioned high on the wall and doesn’t provide the immersive river view that Avalon’s Panorama Suites are known for.
If you imagine yourself lingering in your room with coffee while castles and vineyards drift past, you may decide the view is worth the upgrade. If you know you’re not going to be spending a lot of time in your cabin, the Deluxe Stateroom can offer excellent value.
And if you want to watch castles and towns drift by you could always do so from the lounge.
The Panorama Suite: Best for the Signature Avalon Experience
The Panorama Suite is Avalon’s signature accommodation and the room most travelers picture when they imagine sailing with the company.
At approximately 200 square feet, it offers more room than a Deluxe Stateroom, a dedicated seating area, a thoughtfully designed bathroom and useful storage including space to tuck suitcases under the bed (every room type offers this).
But the feature that truly changes the experience is the view.
Avalon positions the bed to face the river, so you wake up looking toward the water instead of a wall. The glass windows are approximately 11-feet-wide and open about seven feet, transforming your room into what Avalon calls an Open-Air Balcony.
Instead of sacrificing interior space for a small exterior balcony, you can enjoy the scenery from right inside your cabin. You can open the window for fresh air while conditions allow, or leave it closed and watch the landscape pass by from the comfort of your bed. It’s truly magical.
Who should choose a Panorama Suite?
This room may be right for you if:
Waking up to the river is part of the experience you are dreaming about.
You want more room to relax without paying for the largest suite.
You enjoy quiet time in your cabin between excursions and dinner.
You are celebrating a milestone or taking a long-awaited bucket-list trip.
You want the room design Avalon is best known for.

Is the Panorama Suite worth the upgrade?
For many travelers, yes, especially if the scenery is one of the main reasons they chose a river cruise.
On an ocean cruise, you may spend long stretches looking out at open water. On a European river cruise, the landscape is often part of the show: villages, vineyards, church spires, castles and riverbanks can pass by surprisingly close to the ship.
The Panorama Suite lets you enjoy that changing scenery even when you’re getting ready, resting or enjoying a slow morning with a coffee in your room. For travelers who value the view, it often offers the best balance of comfort, space and price.
Which Avalon Room Should You Choose?
If you're still undecided? Ask yourself these five questions:
1. How much time will I realistically spend in my room?
If your days will be packed with excursions and you love spending evenings in the lounge, a Deluxe Stateroom may be enough. If your ideal trip includes slow mornings and private time watching the river, consider a Panorama or Royal Suite.
2. How important is the view?
If opening your eyes to castles, vineyards and riverside villages sounds like an essential part of the trip, the Panorama Suite is difficult to beat.
3. How much space makes me comfortable?
Some travelers can happily live out of a compact room. Others feel far more relaxed with a proper sitting area and additional floor space. There is no wrong answer though, only the answer that suits the way you travel.
4. What else could I do with the price difference?
An upgrade may be worth every dollar to you. Or that money might create more joy as extra nights in Europe, a special excursion, upgraded airfare or money to put towards your next trip. Compare the complete vacation, not only the cabin.
5. Is this a milestone trip?
For an anniversary, retirement celebration or long-awaited bucket-list journey, you may place more value on making the room part of the memory. Just remember: a meaningful trip does not require the most expensive suite.
Our Final Verdict
Choose the Deluxe Stateroom if you want the most budget-friendly way to sail with Avalon and would rather spend your time and money beyond your room.
Choose the Panorama Suite if the river view is central to your dream and you want Avalon’s signature balance of space, comfort and scenery + that open air balcony.
Choose the Royal Suite if you value more space, exclusivity and an elevated onboard experience.
The question isn't, “Which Avalon room is best

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between an Avalon Panorama Suite and a Deluxe Stateroom?
The Deluxe Stateroom is typically about 172 square feet and has a high, fixed window near the waterline. A Panorama Suite is typically about 200 square feet and features Avalon’s wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling Open-Air Balcony window, plus a bed positioned to face the river.
Do Avalon Panorama Suites have a real balcony?
Rather than attaching a small exterior balcony to the room, Avalon uses a wall of glass that opens widely to create an Open-Air Balcony within the suite. This design preserves more usable interior space while still allowing guests to enjoy fresh air and unobstructed river views when conditions permit.

Are Avalon Royal Suites really worth it?
A Royal Suite can be worth the upgrade for travelers who prioritize extra living space, plan to relax in their room frequently or want a more premium experience. Travelers who spend most of the day outside their cabin may find better value in another room category.
Which Avalon room is best for motion sickness?
Lower-deck rooms generally experience less noticeable motion than rooms higher on a ship. Avalon’s Deluxe Staterooms are typically located on the lower deck, making them worth considering if you are sensitive to movement. River cruises are generally calmer than ocean cruises, but conditions can still vary.
Do suitcases fit under the beds in Avalon rooms?
On Avalon’s European Suite Ships, luggage can generally be stored under the bed in all three main room categories. Exact bed clearance and room layouts can vary, so travelers with unusually large luggage should confirm the details of their specific ship.
